With the continuous improvements in information technology in the past decade, Digital Marketing has become one of the hot topics for business owners. It’s one of those fancy buzzwords that
people use to sound smart in their official meetings. Although it is a viral and widely used method of marketing in developed countries nowadays, it’s still an alien concept to the businessman of developing countries like Pakistan.
Now the question is – what is digital marketing?
Why is digital marketing so much important?
What are the benefits of Digital Marketing?
Why am I supposed to start now rather than waiting for the right time?
If it’s you asking these questions, then you should read until the end because we are going to answer each and every one of your queries in this article.
So, let’s start with answering the most fundamental question.
What is Digital Marketing?
Well, digital marketing is “advertising and promoting your business, products or services over electronic devices.”
Pretty concise huh?
There are six subdivisions of Digital Marketing that we are going to cover today.
Social Media Marketing (SMM)
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
Social Media Marketing:
You must be familiar with Social Media Marketing, in which you make your business pages on social media websites i.e. Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.
You can connect with your relevant audience, build relations with them, add value to their life and side by side you can send them to your website/products and earn money. A Win-win for both sides.
Social media is an essential part of Digital Marketing Strategy for your business. An average person spends 135 mins daily on Social media which adds up to be 5 years and 4 months in one lifetime.
In this time you could take part in 10,000+ marathons or you can walk your dog 93,000 times.
But if you are like me, you are spending 4 to 5 hours daily on social media and that will take more than 10 years from our lives. You don’t have to be a scientist to figure out that Digital Marketing is essential for your business.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine Optimization is a big part of Digital Marketing strategy for a business. I would explain search engine optimization (SEO) with an example. Let’s assume there is a huge shopping mall in which you are running your business. If your shop is present in the last corner of the top floor, few people will see your shop, and the fewer people will buy from you.
What if we move your shop to the front of the mall? Will it change anything?
Absolutely – The more people see your shop, the more chances there will be to get more customers and eventually more money you earn.
Search engine optimization is just the same thing in an online world where your website is a piece of the online real estate, and you need to move it to the front page of the searches. If your website is not present on the 1st page of the search results, the chances are, you are not going to profit from it a lot but if you can move it to the front? You know the answer.
Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
SEM is simply a paid version of SEO where you pay search engines to be in the top rankings for your given keywords. The more people visit your website, the more business you get.
All you have to do is to optimize your ads to the level where you put $1 and you get $2. If you can achieve this level, your business qualifies for the paid growth model. At this point, when you put $1000 you can make them $2000.
What if you put $100,000 in SEM? or $1M?
The Content Marketing is the use of relevant and valuable content for engaging your potential customer and makes them take a favorable action on your site i.e. buying your products or subscribing to a monthly newsletter etc.
Content Marketing also helps you to improve your SEO. The more content you have on your website, the more keywords you can incorporate hence you will get improved website ranking.
Email Marketing is one of the oldest types of Digital Marketing and it is considered conventional, but it’s still a very effective channel to market your products. If a person subscribed to your newsletter on your website, you can send him an email at any time.
Eventually, you can share the best deals and discounts with them and eventually make them buy your products.
There was a time when the opening rates and Click Through Rates (CTR) of the emails were through the roof. But, as the number of businesses who were leveraging this type of Digital Marketing increased, the number of people reading and interacting with emails decreased significantly.
One thing you should keep in mind while marketing your products/services, not everyone is your client and not everyone will buy from you but you can still make money if your conversion rate is 1-2% in the start.
Finally, there is Affiliate marketing. In which people promote your goods or services, and you share profits with them for each product sold.
I know it’s hard to share your profits with other people but hear me out first. This type of Digital Marketing won’t require you to spend months on improving your SEO or spend hundreds of Dollars on paid marketing.
You just have to give affiliate links to people who are willing to promote your business and they will do the rest. Giving a small percentage of the profits won’t hurt you once you have regular sales coming in.
Offline Marketing – Dying or already dead?
Let’s see if offline marketing is worth investing your time and money or not. If you are a businessman who is living in the past, you must have faith in Offline ways of advertising like newspapers, radio, outdoor billboards, brochures, and Television advertising.
But you know what?
It’s dying – and faster than you can imagine. Let’s have a look at each of these channels to know in detail.
- Television Advertising is most expensive in traditional marketing channels, and the chances are, you can’t even think about going for TV advertising if you are not a multinational company or you have a marketing budget of Millions
Even If you want to go for Cable Advertising, what good it is if no one watches your ad?
Don’t believe us? Have a look.
This is what happens when we are sitting in front of the TV. I am sure that you have seen people doing it a lot of times in your home, at a friend’s house or it may even be YOU.
Still, think TV advertising got a shot? Why don’t we show you some shocking statistics?
Yes – It’s True. Almost 9 out of 10 people use mobile devices while they are watching television and 47% of them do it to fill the time during ad breaks.
Now you have an idea about what will happen to your money if you invest in TV or cable advertising.
If you still think that we are joking – Try remembering five television ads you saw in last week. If you remember 5 ads, write them in the comments 😉
- Radio and Newspapers are too old-fashioned, even in Pakistan. Smartphones, iPods, and tablets have already replaced them.
You would not see anyone listening to radio who wants to enjoy some music; he would merely turn on his mobile, go to YouTube, and be amused by music along with videos as well. That’s the power of technology.
Yeah, It’s that old!
Newspapers got replaced by social media like facebook, twitter, youtube, and blogs where people not only can read the latest news but they can watch videos as well, and the biggest reason is that it’s fun to sit down and scroll down your newsfeed.
Now, let’s talk about Billboards Advertising. There was a time when billboards were a great investment for getting your business noticed, but it’s not the case now.
This type of offline advertising is dying in Pakistan.
When the next time you are on the road, just have a look at the driver’s seat of cars around you. Just for a second.
The chances are, more than 50% of people would be using their mobile phones.
A recent research study by AT&T showed that 70% drivers are using their smartphones while driving. This data shows their activity during their mobile use:
61% people: Texting
27% People: Facebook
14% people: Twitter
14% people: Instagram
11% People: SnapChat
10% people: Video chat
Now – Think for a while, If 70% drivers are using digital media, then what people will be doing who are in the back seat?
Let’s Move on to the next big question
Why digital marketing is so much important?
I can’t emphasize the importance of Digital Marketing enough in this rapidly growing world.
Allow me to share some stories with you that changed the course of digital marketing and e-commerce in Pakistan.
In July of 2012, an online e-commerce website “Daraz.pk” launched in Pakistan. At that time, people were afraid to buy anything online but after that, there was a rapid boom in the e-commerce industry, and then everyone was so obsessed with selling their products online which further led to new online companies like “Kaymu” and “Food Panda.”
What happened here?
They harnessed the power of Digital Media and marketed their products when no one was willing to invest in this sector.
Now they are hundreds of copycat online stores trying to take their share in the market in this fierce competition.
I love stories – Do You?
Like it or not, I am going to share another story.
I promise it would be last, lol.
Long before Daraz, there was an entrepreneur “Hanif Iqbal,” who started an online platform for automotive fans. That was the era of Car Dealerships and Showrooms. They would charge huge commissions for buying and selling of used cars.
Then what happened?
To cut to the chase, today that website is the biggest online marketplace for car sellers and buyers. That website is known as “Pak Wheels” with the highest registered members in Pakistan that are around 250,000
What’s the benefit?
You don’t have to give any commission to anyone if you are selling your car on PakWheels. You know what are those dealers doing these days?
Rather than going to market their own business digitally, they are placing ads on Pakwheels for selling their cars.
It’s not the government which is not giving opportunities to companies; it’s their very own CEO’s and directors who are not willing to promote themselves because they don’t have the heart to spend a little money on Digital Marketing.
Move on to the last question, Why am I supposed to start Digital Marketing now rather than waiting for the right time?
Honestly, the best time for starting digital marketing for your own business was almost ten years ago. If you haven’t started yet, it’s now or never.
Reason#1: Digital Marketing is low-cost:
Whether you are going for social media marketing or Google search marketing, the prices are very low.
For the same amount of targeted persons, TechDevout’s local clients in Pakistan are paying 5 to 10 time less than our international customers just because the competition is much higher over there. Let’s understand it with an example.
If you can reach 1000 local customers (Cost per impression) on social media in 1$, the same reach would cost you around 6$ to 13$ if you were present in US or Canada. The worst thing is; they don’t have any choice other than advertising.
That doesn’t mean they are not getting profits from digital marketing. Our Clients in the United States and Canada are getting 2X to 5X Return on investment on their total spending.
Reason#2: Digital Marketing Agencies cost way less.
As compared to Digital Marketing agencies located in the western world, Pakistani agencies would charge you three to five times less than what you would pay over there.
Yes, it’s hard to find a good Digital Marketing Agency in Pakistan but you can always contact us 😂
If you wait for three more years to start your digital marketing, prices would be very high here as well, and you would be just getting started rather than taking profits.
Reason#3: Not Enough Competition.
Just assume, you decided to make your website and start working on ranking your website on the top. There is little competition in every industry in Pakistan, and it’s easy to rank higher and hence you would have to put less effort and less money to reach the top.
Once you make it to the top, it is easy to maintain your rankings rather than building your ranking from scratch in an enormous competition.
If you are a businessman and haven’t started advertising your business, services or products in this digital world, and you are not even thinking about working on your digital marketing, the chances are, you are going to be out of business in next five years.
I get it; you think Tech Devout can be wrong. Would you listen to Bill Gates if he asked you to do so?
Here you go!
Is it making sense now?
Now it’s your time to think if you want to start your digital marketing now and be a leader and innovator in your industry. Or you want to start with Digital Marketing when all your competition has taken over the internet.
With their influence on thousands of customers who don’t want to do business with you because you haven’t made an image online where people can find you.
It’s time for you to decide whether you want to be a leader or you want to remain with a “saith mindset” and left alone while watching others to grow.
